Laptop Evaluation Checklist

STEPS	NOTES AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
REMOVE THE HARD DRIVE	Before you do anything else, always remove the laptop's hard drive. If you can't find one, try and confirm that one's not installed by finding its interface on the motherboard.
Check the optical drive for any CDs	Use a small paper clip in the quick-release hole to open the optical drive. Any optical discs that you may find should be deposited in the Return to Receiving box.
Is there a Floppy Drive?	YES It's a recycler! Follow the Laptop Recycling checklist NO Proceed to the next step.
Is there a USB Port?	YES Proceed to the next step. NO It's a recycler! Follow the Laptop Recycling checklist
Is the screen broken, or is there extensive damage?	YES We may still want this for a Parts Machine. Consult your instructor on what to do next NO Proceed to the next step.
Find a power adapter	Check for the power rating underneath the laptop. Sometimes you will end up having to use a higher amperage adapater than what's printed on the laptop. Consult your instructor if you have any questions!
Does the system POST? Can you get into BIOS?	YES Find its specs (for guidance, follow the Determining Specs guide) and fill out a Keeper Label for the system NO Consult the Laptop POST Troubleshooting Checklist
Outfit the machine according to its specs!	Check the whiteboard to see which spec the system fits under. Install an imaged hard drive, if available. Double check to make sure the RAM and hard drive size are appropriate!
Put the system up for Memtest	You can either boot Memtest from the harddrive, the network, or a LiveCD. For guidance, follow the steps under the Laptop Testing guide.
