Intro

This page should address how Free Geek's Facility might change over the next 3-5 years so that we can better fulfill our mission and live up to our principles.

State of the program

Free Geek is about 15000 spft. As of late 2003 we rent the whole first floor 1700 block on SE 10th Ave. We are attempting to become better organized in how we use our facility to fulfill our mission.

Current and past issues

Free Geek is a messy messy place.

Starting about a year after we acquired the south part of the building we started having official meetings on space usage. They started slow. Then the council, in December of 2006 came up with a Zoning structure for Free Geek. Not long after We started having Space usage meeting every week or two. In space usage we attempt to adjust the floor plan of Free Geek to Meet the zoning requirements, create a better flow of items through the building, and to create a cleaner-saver-comfortable environment for the community of volunteers.

Trends and predictions

Free Geek is Trending towards a more modularized set up. One example of this modularization is the use of rolling storage for the finished computers. We will, some day, get the point where we will out grow our building or its feasibility for change in layout.

Free Geek does have the option of growing the amount of real estate that it currently rents in the next year. General consensuses around Free Geek is that Renting more with out removing the clutter from what we currently have is a really bad idea.

Perdiction:

Free Geek will continue to rent the 15000 sqft that it currently rents. In the next 3 to 5 years we will have raised money through fund drives and securing grants so that we can purchase our own building. In the mean time Free Geek modularize our process in preparation for a move, and also for preparation in changes in technology.

SWOTs

Acquire a new building
Good (for Free Geek) Bad (for Free Geek)
Internal
(to Free Geek)

Strengths: Strengths are advantages we have that are internal to Free Geek and helpful to achieving the objective. (Good things we do.)

  • We have a lot of experience in to design our area for work flow
  • We have a positive cash flow at this time.

Weaknesses: Weaknesses are problems we have that are internal to Free Geek and harmful to achieving the objective. (Things we do poorly or not at all.)

  • Informing the public of a move takes a lot of energy and we can sometimes run out of steam.
External
(to Free Geek)

Opportunities: Opportunities are advantages we have that are external to Free Geek and helpful to achieving the objective. (Good things that will or could happen to us.)

  • the sweetest location could come up just as we get enough money in the pot
  • someone might be looking to buy a building for a origination like us

Threats: Threats are problems we have that are external to Free Geek and harmful to achieving the objective. (Bad things that will or could happen to us.)

  • the real estate market fluctuates
    • prices could be peaking as we are ready to buy
    • the market could plummet after we buy
  • If our income drops, we would still have a large fixed cost of buying the building

Weaknesses: Weaknesses are problems we have that are internal to Free Geek and harmful to achieving the objective. (Things we do poorly or not at all.)

  • We would be landlords and we are not very good at that.
  • We would have to make the location handicap accessible (spending money on a building that is not ours)
  • We tend to fill areas up with junk.

Opportunities: Opportunities are advantages we have that are external to Free Geek and helpful to achieving the objective. (Good things that will or could happen to us.)

  • Landlord decides to give us the building because we are such awesome tenants.
  • We may continue to expand.

Threats: Threats are problems we have that are external to Free Geek and harmful to achieving the objective. (Bad things that will or could happen to us.)
