iMac Rebuild Table

Steps Notes Done
Remove bottom cover
  1. Flip iMac over on a soft mat
  2. Remove 4 screws (#2 Phillips):
    • 2 near hinged front lifter
    • 2 underneath oval grill (which can be gently pried open with a flat tip screwdriver), the 2 outermost screws
  3. gently lift rear of cover; if there is resistance from the front, strike front of cover gently but firmly with heel of hand to release the latches
Remove metal mesh cover plate
  • Use a magnetized #2 Phillips screwdriver, otherwise run the risk of dropping a screw into the interior of the iMac.
  • Remove the 6 #2 Phillips screws holdoing the plate:
    • 4 around the outer edge
    • 2 on top
Check capacitors
Remove ram Put ram in Eval DIMM box or Advanced Test Incoming box
Remove hard drive
  1. Disconnect power connector and ribbon cable
  2. Remove 4 #1 or #2 Phillips screws on top of drive cage
  3. Slide drive out
  4. Put hard drive in Eval hard drive bin
Test battery
  1. Remove battery
  2. Test for 3.6v or better
  3. Replace with good battery if less than 3.6v
  4. Reinstall
Replace ram 256MB, 2x128MB PC-100 SDRAM
Replace hard drive 20GB
Clean/dust inside If necessary
Attach keyboard/mouse and powercord Leave iMac upside down
Power on, boot Finnix CD
  1. Press power button
  2. Immediately insert Finnix CD
  3. At the chime, press C key and hold until small underline cursor appears in upper left corner of display
Record configuration
  • CPU type and speed, memory size, HD size, video controller, CD/DVD type:
    • Finnix boot message shows CPU speed and detected memory size
    • HD size is known from installation
    • command lspci lists video controller
    • command cat /proc/ide/hdb/model shows CD/DVD model name
Set HW date/time to UTC
Power down
Close up the box check for loose parts and cables
Install Ubuntu
Install extra apps, as necessary gnome-ppp, ogle-gui, k3b
Test CD/DVD data and sound, and video if necessary CD-RW test?
Test/detect modem
Close up the box check for loose parts and cables
Clean outside cover case, monitor face, connector panel, keyboard, mouse
Fill out and attach store tag
Bundle iMac with tested keyboard/mouse and power cord
Take it to store or store staging shelf

Ubuntu Installation

Steps Notes Done
Attach keyboard/mouse, network cable, power cord
Power on, perform network boot At boot chime, press and hold Option+Apple+O+F; at OpenFirmware prompt, enter boot enet:0,yaboot, then press Enter.
