- This article is about the command line interface; for the command line class, see Basic Linux Command Line for Builders.
The command line is an interface, or way of interacting with a computer, which is text-only (as opposed to a graphical user interface, or GUI).
When using the command line, you type commands at a prompt. You may use tab completion if you are smart and savvy.
There's an essay called In the Beginning Was the Command Line by Neal Stephenson.
