Free Geek is a unique work environment. For this reason it is essential that each applicant take a tour of our facility (active volunteers are exempt). Tours are offered Tuesday - Saturday at both 12:00PM and 5PM.

Can you make us loom head and shoulders above the competition? Can you help us help the public love and appreciate our greatness? Are you comfortable in a unique, constantly changing, non-hierarchical work environment? Are you happily haunted by visions of marketing, branding, PR and the like? If so, this might be the position for you!

Job Description:

The Community Marketing Coordinator will be responsible for the public face of Free Geek and increasing awareness of our organization in the greater community. He/she will drive new business to Free Geek in various forms ranging from increasing the quantity of hardware donations to attracting more Thrift Store customers. Free Geek has implemented some related strategies and therefore a Community Marketing Coordinator will not be responsible for creating an entire program from scratch but will have other staff members to work with him/her. We are specifically seeking someone with a Marketing and/or Outreach background. As Free Geek can be a somewhat chaotic place, the ideal applicant is a confident self-motivator and unafraid of an informal work environment. The Community Marketing Coordinator will spend the first few weeks on the job working floor shifts in multiple areas of Free Geek in order to get a comprehensive understanding of the organization. Help us keep Portland wired (or maybe weird)!

  • Maintain contact list
  • Work various floor shifts This will be revisited after an initial six month period. The intention is to keep the person filling the position in touch with Free Geek's culture. However, actual floor shift work (beyond the first couple of weeks for orientation purposes) would not allow the remainder of the job to be accomplished, given the shortened hours.
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines
  • Establish, maintain, and foster effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Coordinate and train volunteers for outreach opportunities
  • Maintain print and electronic documentation to support these goals
