Introduction

  • Who has used a digital camera?
  • What do you want to learn from this class?
  • What does GThumb Image Viewer do?
  • How is it different from the Gimp?

Getting Started

  • Open gThumb by clicking on Applications --> Graphics --> gThumb Image Viewer
  • In order to view or edit images, you must first have images saved on your computer.
  • Once you open gThumb, your pictures should be there for you to see.
  • Select an image to manipulate.

Image

  • Image --> Enhance
    • If you choose to enhance, this means that the program will automatically adjust color levels. If you like this, stick with it. If not, click on Edit --> Undo
  • Image --> Resize
    • Resizing your images can be amazing! Remember: You will want to keep aspect ratio, and if your image gets too large, you will lose clarity. Play around with it until you find the right size.
  • Image --> Crop
    • Want to crop someone out who no longer belongs? Or pick out your favorite part of a photo? Cropping allows you to select a part of an image, leaving the rest in the dust! Simply put the box around whatever you want to keep, and choose "apply." Again, you may "undo" if you don not want to keep the change. You will still have the original photo to work with.
  • Image --> Transform
    • Transform allows you to rotate your picture. You may also flip it, or mirror it. Try all functions, and choose one that works for you.
  • Image --> Desaturate
    • If you choose "Desaturate," you will be able to view your image in black and white.
  • Image --> Negative
    • Choose "Negative" allows you to view your image with negative colors.
  • Image --> Color Balance
    • You can play with the color balance in your photo. Are you sunburned and want to look pale? Are you sick and green and wish to appear healthy? Are you freezing and blue but want to appear simply chilly? You can move the color balance back and forth until you strike your balance.
  • Image --> Hue Saturation
    • Similar to color balance, you can change the hue saturation. You may select varying degrees of hue, lightness, and saturation.
  • Image --> Brightness/Contrast
    • You may adjust your brightness and contrast. Again, play around with this.
  • Image --> Equalize
    • If you choose to equalize, your image histogram will be automatically equalized. This means: all levels will be equal.
  • Image --> Reduce Colors
    • This applies some interesting effects. Play around with this one to see if it's right for you.
  • Image --> Redeye Removal
    • If your image has redeye, you can remove it! Simply point the mouse at the red eyes, and click until the red is gone.
