Sometimes in Free Geek one will end up with a gizmo (a mechanical device or part whose name is forgotten or unknown) in their hands that they really don't know what to do with. Sure, it can always be tossed into CBM or left in receiving. That's what everyone would expect to happen, though. That's why you try to hand your piece of junk to someone and leave it instead in their possession! The rules of the hand-off are the same to "the last who touched it" code that elementary schoolers often enforce amongst each other.

History

"I think I was gone when this whole hand-off thing was started though." -Joren

If you can trace the origins of the hand-off, please post here.

How-To

  1. Acquire piece of junk item:
    • Receiving and recycling are good
    • Tardis and the Black Hole are no-nos
  2. Find victim.
    • More points if they are core.
    • Even more points if they are staff.
    • Handing off to new volunteers is cheap.
  3. Arouse their interest:
    • Show them "something cool" about the item.
    • Ask them a question about the item.
  4. Get them to want to hold it and then BAM! They take it from you.

Famous Hand Offs

FAQ

Q. What constitutes a hand-off?
A. The victim actually has to willingly take the item. Throwing stuff at people does not count as a hand-off.

Q. Can I hand off something that actually is cool and high end?
A. No. The point of a hand-off is that the gizmo is something that sucks and no one really wants.

Q. What if they drop it or try to give it right back to me afterwards?
A. If they willingly took it, the hand-off was successful. As long as you don't willingly take it back, the points are yours.
