Beginning a Shift

Area Tasks

  • Set out systems to be worked on (Builds and/or Evals)
  • Start HDD imaging

Volunteer Management Tasks

  • Greet volunteers, help them all get settled on a task
  • Orient new volunteers and set them on an initial task (typically recyclers)
  • Watch for ESL volunteers and others needing additional assistance to ensure tasks are clear

During a Shift

Area Tasks

  • Check status of laptops on testing shelves and advance them through testing steps
  • Sort incoming laptop component and accessory boxes
  • Advance imaging HDDs through process, retrieve wiped drives from SDA
  • Empty recycling cart

Slow Time Area Tasks

  • Cull parts
  • Clean and organize workspace
  • Perform advanced repairs (screen swaps on delicate systems, complicated part replacement, etc.)
  • Sort RAM
  • Print additional labels as needed

Volunteer Management Tasks

  • Go around the table periodically and ensure everyone is understanding and succeeding at their tasks (using provided documentation, following correct procedures, etc.)
  • Make sure volunteers are aware when you are leaving the room and know where to find another staff member who can assist with any urgent situations (Urgent situations being injuries, interpersonal conflicts, etc.; non-Laptops staff shouldn't be required to assist with typical area functons)
  • Make sure music, conversation, and other "environmental" aspects are appropriate and comfortable for all volunteers

Ending a Shift

Area Tasks

  • Sort any incoming laptops to appropriate shelves
  • Make sure all unwiped hard drives are taken to the SDA
  • Reassemble toolkits and shelve them, return build guides to the desk, clear additional tools and parts from the workbench
  • Shut closets
  • If it's the end of the day shut down the research stations, turn off overhead lights, and ensure any important or valuable systems and parts are secure.

Volunteer Management Tasks

  • 45 minutes before end of shift: Check in with all volunteers, make sure they aren't starting any tasks that they will not have time to complete and are on course to finish their current task by the end of the shift.
  • 15 minutes before end of shift: Check in with each volunteer individually, make sure they are aware that it is time to finish up and assist them in doing so as necessary.
