Introduction
Based on recent training experiences, we compiled a list of tactics that we thought were helpful and what can be improved in regards to the training process.
Tactics that worked!
- 3 weeks total training period
- Starting easy – Donor Desk, then Receiving, then Prebuild
- If possible have NPAs clear their schedule (of commits, etc.) so that NPA Admin time is dedicated to helping trainees
- Practicing sending emails and posting on the wiki
- Repetition of ideas and introductions to other employees
- NPA being patient and open to all silly questions
Tactics to be improved
- Last week or so of training have trainee in charge at every area under old NPA supervision
- Prebuild - trainee going through the boxes and then teach Hardware ID class; give volunteer orientation to system evaluation
- Receiving - trainee takes care of donors and practices tallying
- Donor Desk - trainee tries to answer all questions/do all work, but have NPA to fill in gaps if needed
- Trainee co-give tour
- If possible 2 consecutive days in Prebuild (too much info for just once a week!)
- Trainee shadow multiple NPAs to ensure that all shifts are covered (ex. opening and closing till)
- Checklist specifically designed for overall NPA responsibilities
- Include Front Desk tasks as well
Additional Suggestions
- Hardware ID: edit boxes, facilitator's guide
- Have fun with it!!
- See NPA class policy
