Pie Crust

This is a vegan recipe my friend Birch gave me.

I have edited his instructions for clarity, but have used the recipe many times and can confirm that it works.

I can also confirm that Birch is very handsome.

  • 3 1/2 cups unbleached flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon turbinado sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup softened margarine (one stick) (Nucoa brand works)
  • 1/3 cup water (maybe 2/3 depending on the flour)

Thoroughly mix dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, sugar) in a large bowl. Next pour in the vegetable oil, mix until it is well distributed into very small clumps. Mix softened margarine in. Now add the water until the desired consistency is achieved.

Split the dough into two lumps, one slightly larger than the other. The larger lump will be the bottom piece. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface. Roll the crust to a size that is roughly 4 inches in diameter greater than your pie pan. Make sure the pan is oiled/greased before putting the dough into it.

This dough cooks best at 375 Fahrenheit for 1 hour exactly.
