Geeks in Vancouver are working on a radio public service announcement for Free Geek. We plan to produce this PSA at CITR and distribute it to CJSF, Coop Radio, etc. We'll try to make it generic, so it could maybe be reused by other Free Geeks.

Completed Product

Here is the completed Free Geek public service announcement Wynde produced: http://freegeekvancouver.org/en/v/radio_spot/psa.wav.html

It's under 30 seconds long and a version for other Free Geeks could be easily produced.

Feedback for the homies

Jack, Wynde, great work. Thanks so much for putting this together! Me loves the jingle. I'll slap it on the next Pedal Revolutionary Radio Show July 19 http://citr.ca A series of these would be rad. Maybe one in the future can include sthing about not being able to afford a computer, to bring in more volunteers/thrift store shoppers. ifny 15:42, 10 July 2007 (PDT)

Draft Score

"It sucks so much computer waste gets stuck in landfills or shipped to the third world," "I wish I had more skills and computers weren't so disempowering," "our charitable organization doesn't have enough computer resources..." FREE GEEK! is a volunteer non profit run by punks like you, recycling hardware, teaching skills and providing access to technology. To recycle hardware, volunteer or request a hardware grant, check out freegeekvancouver.org or call (604) 879-GEEK. Free Geek jingle: Helping the needy get nerdy...

Here's my two beets:

[Sad violin music, or the sad Tetris theme] "I wish I knew someone who could use my old hardware" "I can't afford a computer," "It sucks so much that ewaste gets incinerated, or dumped on poor countries," "Sure wish I had more computer skills," "Our community organization doesn't have enough computer equipment..." [thunderclap sound followed closely by video game theme, like the happy Tetris theme] FREE GEEK COMMUNITY TECHNOLOGY CENTRE is a volunteer-run non profit run by punks like you, recycling hardware, sharing skills and getting refurbished computers back into the community. For more info, check out freegeekvancouver.org or call (604) 879-GEEK. [Free Geek jingle: Helping the needy get nerdy...]

btw re: "stuck in landfills" - the province will be changing this in august anyway. you may wish to inflect that sentence to reflect that the incineration is separate from overseas dumpin (incineration is something that will be implemented locally come august)

Sound Samples

Shawn at Free Geek Portland made the awesome suggestion of video game music:

How 'bout some old school video game music? http://www.vgmusic.com/ or, for
some creative commons-licensed works,

Recorded Audio

We recorded at CITR last week and here are the audio files: http://freegeekvancouver.org/en/v/radio_spot

Wynde, an SFU student and audio production expert is editing the files together.

Among the files are versions for Free Geek Portland.
