The primary focus of this position is working a daily 3-5 hours shift in our bustling Thrift Store and working as part of a cohesive sales team. Additionally, this person will be responsible for instructing regular 3-4 hour volunteer shifts in various production areas of Free Geek, with a focus in:
- Advanced Testing (where volunteers and staff test computer components to ensure an adequate flow to the Thrift Store and other Reuse programs)
- Desktop Build (where volunteers learn about computers by assembling reused components)
Sales/Reuse Staff report to the Sales Coordinator and work directly with Area Coordinators in fulfillment of Reuse duties.
Job Duties
General:
- Provide a safe and welcoming environment to customers and volunteers of all abilities/experience
- Provide excellent customer service and instruction under challenging conditions
- Assist in the training of staff and volunteers
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers for daily tasks, special projects and internships
- Proactively communicate with Free Geek staff & volunteers regarding area needs and issues as they arise
- Initiate and implement improvements to policies and procedures
- Create and maintain documentation of procedures/policies
Sales-specific duties:
- Use POS system to accurately handle cash and credit sales, and close till at end of day
- Process customer returns and issue/redeem store credits based on our policies
- Effectively communicate store policies to customers
- Process, price and shelve incoming products
- Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the store
- Support all aspects of our Sales Department, including online sales, bulk purchases and rentals as needed
Reuse-specific duties:
- Lead workshop-style classes
- Troubleshoot and help maintain Reuse technical infrastructure
- Stock reuse area with needed hardware and components
- Manage incoming and outgoing devices and gizmos
- Recruit volunteers from Build to move on to Post-Build areas
- Keep volunteers on track and within established systems and procedures
- Prepare Reuse areas prior to volunteer shifts
- Orient volunteers to production areas and procedures
Requirements
- Availability during Free Geek hours of operations, including morning and occasional evening meetings as required
- Retail or other sales/customer service experience
- Basic knowledge of computer hardware
- Command of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheet, data entry)
- Experience working with volunteers
- Aptitude for and experience in technical work
- Well-versed in trouble-shooting techniques
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Able to analyze a problem, create the steps to fix it, and follow through on the plan that was created
- Able to lift 25 lbs repeatedly, and 40 lbs. on occasion
- Ability to stand and perform data entry for extended periods
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to work in an informal environment with a diverse population
- Dedication to Free Geek's mission and Open Source philosophies
Preferred:
- Experience with GNU/Linux and Free and Open Source Software a plus
- Multi-lingual a plus
In addition:
The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress in a somewhat chaotic setting and maintain a positive attitude. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions but will be able to work on projects almost entirely without supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.

- There is a 6 month probationary period, with 3 month check-in
