What is "the Weirdness"?

The Weirdness
This is a term coined in 2008 to describe the period of time starting around Jan 1, 2009 when a number of changes resulting from eWaste legislation and the change in TV technology will impact Free Geek is as of then unknown ways. Potential questions raised include how much of an issue new competition will be, how many people will want to donate when mandatory fees drop off, how many TVs we will see and how we will handle them. Note, at the same time CRT donations have started to drop off. Since the coining of the term, a number of changes in the economy have also presented themselves, adding further uncertainty to the mix.

What makes it different from "the Future"? Ian 23:51, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Usually you can predict in a fairly useful way what you expect the future to hold. For example, looking at past trends about monitor fees gave us an idea of what was likely to come, and we used these assumptions for budgeting. Until we see how the new rules actually affect us, such predictions become more arbitrary and less useful.

The first reference I can find to this term in the wiki is a Priorities Meeting in June 08: Overview Time Line

The actual meeting took place on July 1, 2008 [1], where the concept was described as "Period B (January - June) weird, unknown period when e-waste changes become apparent - are we losing a significant chunk of change?"

Mid-Weirdness Commentary

Q: How many people want to donate now that mandatory fees have dropped?

Q: How many TVs do we see and how are we handling them? (Note, this is when CRT donations have dropped.

Q: How are other changes in the economy effecting these things?
