Hello! Thanks for your email. There has been a lot of interest across the country lately from people who've begun the process of starting their own Free Geek. We're enthused that the idea is catching. In fact, we have a franchising process in place so that we may better help new Free Geeks through all of the trials and tribulations it takes to start such a rich and varied organization.

Hello! Thanks for your email. There has been a lot of interest across North America lately from people who've begun the process of starting their own Free Geek. We're enthused that the idea is catching. In fact, we have a trademark use process in place so that we may better help new Free Geeks through all of the trials and tribulations it takes to start such a rich and varied organization.

So, where should you start? We'll, if you haven't already,

  • Join the startups list. You can go to http://www.freegeek.org/about/intergalactic/startup-list-signup/ to do so. This list is for people who'd like to start up Free Geeks and similar organizations. We're finding that the various Free Geek startups can be one of the most useful sources of new information for fledgling organizations like yours.
  • Check out the wiki pages on the subject. There's a lot of info about Free Geek startups already collected on the mothership's wiki: http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/Free_Geek_Startups.
  • Once you've got all your ducks in a row (i.e. have a handful of dedicated volunteers, reviewed all the relevant documentation, signed up on the startups list, asked a bunch of questions, etc.) fill out our trademark use application: http://freegeek.org/franchiseapp.php

Also, you're welcome to come to a Free Geek in your area (see http://freegeek.org/family.php for a complete list) for a week or two so you can get a better idea of how things work, ask lots of questions, and enjoy some time in a different city or town. If you can come to visit, let us know on the startup list. Very likely, a Geek will be able to offer you a free homestay with one of their illustrious volunteers or staff members.

We're thrilled that you're interested in Free Geek's reuse/recycling/education model, and we look forward to communicating with you more in the future!
