There is a script that automates this job.

Things to note:

  1. You do not need to do a backup, the script does it for you.
  2. This script needs to be run twice, pay careful attention to any instructions.
  3. Keeps an eye on the scripts progress, there may be occasional prompts. It is safe to choose the default option in all cases.

How to Use

  2. Download it from ts backup: wget htpp://tsbackup/upgrade-ubuntu.sh
  3. chmod +x ./upgrade-ubuntu.sh
  4. ./upgrade-ubuntu.sh
  5. DO NOT REBOOT WHEN PROMPTED for the first time.
  6. Choose do not reboot.
  7. Press x to the destroy session.
  8. Then reboot.
  9. Run the script for a second time
