Based on the discussion had in the Distro meeting on 6 Oct 2011, a revision of the Distro Intern job description is in order. Specifically, we are looking for 3 interns to work collaboratively, with an optional focus on the following areas:

  • Usability, UI & Design
  • Bug reports/fixes
  • Hardware Testing

Ideally, these internships would start with testing and researching different distributions and versions of distributions to help Free Geek to determine what the distro best fits its needs. The question currently is to determine whether a single job description is in order, or if separate ones that reflect the above paths will be necessary.

Our first concern is to determine who will or can take on being the Intern supervisor. The idea of the Distro Committee itself filling in the supervisory role was initially put forward, though concerns as to who will be accountable for seeing the Interns through their orientation and training may not be addressed. A possible solution could be for each of the interns to report to specific staff person based on their role (e.g., Usability & UI to Mike M., Bug reports/fixes to Vagrant, Hardware to Sean E.).

Below is a draft for the Distro Intern job description:

Job Title: Distro Intern
Hours Weekly: 10 hours/week
Days Per Week: 2 -3 days/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 6 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Paul Munday, Tech Support Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in Distro Committee meetings,
  • Collaborate with Free Geek Staff and other Distro Interns via e-mail lists and RT,
  • Keeping Free Geek volunteers' needs in mind:
    • Perform usability QA
    • Identify current bugs in Ubuntu 10.04, and determine existence in other versions/distros
    • Write bug reports and, if possible, create bug fixes
    • Develop specifications for hardware and software in candidate distribution
    • Test candidate distribution across various kinds of hardware
    • Draft updated documentation for use in Free Geek's Tech Support, Build, and Education programs
    • Gather and research list of known issues

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with basic troubleshooting
  • Experience using and configuring Linux
  • Familiarity with bug tracking and ticketing systems
  • Technical aptitude
  • Usability QA experience or the desire to learn
  • Understanding of how inexperienced users interact with computers

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
