Original note: This internship requires a solid commitment to learning the innerworkings of Free Geek, patiently and clearly informing volunteers of what they need to know in order to be comfortable and have fun at Free Geek, and helping to maintain/increase the quality of our volunteer programs.

Job Title: Volunteer Coordination Intern
Hours Weekly: 5 to 15 hours/week
Days Per Week: 1 to 3 days/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 6 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Shawn, Volunteer Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Help answer public email inquiries to volunteer@ email address
  • Maintain form responses for email
  • Process information gathered from Adoption Program Volunteers through surveys.
  • Give tours/keep tour script up to date
  • Complete on-the-ground volunteer coordination
  • Keep build volunteer documents up-to-date
  • Update volunteer-related documentation as needed
  • Help put systems in place which encourage volunteer acculturation
  • Also, as needed and desired: assist with events by coordinating event volunteers, coordinating the distribution of fliers, etc.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least a little experience coordinating groups of people preferred/a big plus
  • Interest in working with volunteers from diverse backgrounds
  • Interest in creating an empowered and agreeable volunteer workplace
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Ability to explain things clearly in front of small groups and over email
  • Possession of some user-end computer experience (email, word processing). HTML experience a plus.
  • Pleasant, outgoing presence
  • Detail-oriented
  • Good listener
  • Enjoy working with people
  • Understanding of Free Geek and Open Source philosophy

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
