'''Volunteers under 16 years of age need to have an adult volunteer alongside them.'''  This adult must be 18 years or older. The adult may be an older sibling, friend, parent, teacher, neighbor - but they have to volunteer alongside the youth while they are at Free Geek.    In the Adoption program this means that both volunteers need to schedule their volunteer shifts in the same work area during the same times.  In Build, both volunteers can schedule shifts in the same work area at the same time.  That being said, if a guardian is not interested in going through the Build program then they need to stay in the same area the under 16 volunteer is volunteering in.  If the guardian chooses not to sign up for a shift with the under 16 volunteer, they would need to check in with the Area Coordinator to find out where they can hang out and they would not log volunteer hours at the end of the shift.

The only exception to this rule is if a guardian has received prior approval from a collective member in their volunteer area to volunteer or hang out in a different area at Free Geek during the youth's volunteer shift.  It is important that the parent or guardian understand that if any problems arise, they will be asked to volunteer alongside the under 16 volunteer again at all times.

We recognize that some young volunteers are exceptionally mature. If a collective staff member and a core volunteer and/or another staff member feels they can vouch for the behavior and safety of the under-16 in question, they may sponsor the volunteer to come in alone. Under 16 volunteers need to get the approval of two core sponsors, one of whom must be part of the Free Geek staff collective.

Under 16 volunteers who would qualify for this exception must be able to work well independently, demonstrated good behavior and responsibility, and already have a good working relationship with core volunteers and staff in their area.  They are also probably very interested in computers and often, when you talk to them, you probably forget that you're talking to someone who's under 16.
